Covalent Metrology Growing Quickly, Expanding Capabilities to Serve Customers

June 27, 2019 Sunnyvale, CA – Covalent Metrology has grown more than 300% over the past year, driven by strong demand for its imaging, characterization and analysis services.  Covalent is now investing heavily to meet broader customer needs.  The Company is acquiring multiple new analytical instruments, expanding its Silicon Valley lab, launching a customer data portal, and expanding its partnership with Rigaku Corporation to showcase world class X-ray characterization tools.

In late May, the Company closed on a fully-subscribed Series A financing round, which has enabled Covalent to acquire new instruments to address additional customer needs, including:

  • Film thickness and materials composition analysis: a state-of-the-art Rigaku AZX 400 WD-XRF spectrometer with automated 200mm and 300mm wafer loading (late July).
  • Optical characterization of materials and films: a fully-equipped Perkin Elmer LAMBDA 1050 UV-Vis-NIR Spectrophotomer (early July).
  • Identification of organic materials / contaminants: Thermo Scientific’s Nicolet 6700 Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer (early July).
  • Characterizing water contact angle and abrasion resistance: Linear and circular abrasion systems from Taber Industries and an Ossila Contact Angle Goniometer with a high resolution camera and automated dispenser (available now).

Additionally, Covalent is expanding its facility at 921 Thompson Place in Sunnyvale, increasing its footprint by approximately 50%, to accomodate new tools and staff.

Feb 28, 2019, Santa Clara, CA.  Covalent Metrology announced today that it has acquired two advanced optical instruments from Keyence Corporation:  the recently released VR-5200 Wide Area 3D Measurement System and a VHX-6000 Series Digital Microscope.  In combination with an existing Keyence VK-1100 Laser Confocal Microscope and VR-3200 Wide Area 3D Measurement System, Covalent now has the largest set of Keyence instruments available at any outsourced analytical service lab.

 

Covalent’s surface imaging toolset also includes:  White Light Interferometry (Zygo ZeGage Plus), Scanning Probe Microscopy (Bruker Dimension Icon / FastScan), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (Hitachi S-4700 with 70mm EDAX silicon drift detector).

Dr. Jeffrey Sullivan Joins Covalent Metrology Services as VP, Metrology Partners

February 14, 2019, Sunnyvale, CA – Covalent Metrology announced today that Dr. Jeffrey Sullivan has joined the company as VP of Metrology Partners, the company’s digital-age metrology consulting solutions business.  Dr. Sullivan will also focus on expanding the Company’s network of 3rd-party labs as well as the company’s in-house characterization services capabilities.

Dr. Sullivan has broad experience in the entire technology-oriented product life-cycle for both advanced materials and capital equipment, from initial R&D into engineering and new product development and ultimately scale manufacturing and customer adoption.  He worked for General Electric from 2010 to 2017.  At GE Global Research, Dr. Sullivan developed and led a portfolio of cross-business R&D programs while managing a team of R&D researchers.  Previously, at GE Renewables, he served as Factory Integration Leader, designing and implementing a high-volume manufacturing plant.  During the prior decade, at Applied Materials, Dr. Sullivan held the roles of Director of Engineering, Senior Program Manager and Engineer.

A new collaboration between Covalent Metrology and Rigaku will deliver state-of-the-art metrology capabilities to the semiconductor and electronics markets

In a joint declaration, Covalent and Rigaku reveal a first-of-its-kind collaboration agreement demonstrating a mutual commitment to support American high-tech industries with the most advanced metrology capabilities in the world.

Covalent Metrology Hires former eBay / PayPal executive Mark Harrison as Chief Operating Officer

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Nov 13, 2018 — Covalent Metrology announced today that Mark Harrison has joined the company as Chief Operating Officer and VP of Customer Experience & Marketing.  He will be responsible for service delivery, customer experience, marketing, sales operations, partner operations and the technology platform for next-gen services.

Mr. Harrison brings to Covalent more than 20 years experience advising, conceiving of and managing disruptive new enterprises.  Most recently at BCG Digital Ventures, he helped legacy companies reinvent themselves with innovative technology, business models & partnerships.  Previously, as Head of the eBay Mobile business, he helped grow eBay mobile sales from 10% to over 50% of all eBay volume. And at PayPal, as Head of Strategy & New Ventures he managed the innovation roadmap, strategic partnerships – and personally lead the launch of PayPal Mobile.

Covalent Metrology Acquires Advanced High Resolution XRD / XRR System from Rigaku Corporation

October 10th, 2018 Sunnyvale, CA – Covalent Metrology announced today that it has taken delivery of a top-of-the-line, fully-equipped Rigaku SmartLab X-ray Diffraction (XRD) system at its Silicon Valley facility. Launched by Rigaku in April 2018 and equipped with the latest Studio II software suite, this state-of-the-art XRD system generates the highest quality XRD and XRR information with unmatched resolution, measurement speed and flexibility (sample type and preferred orientation). Covalent’s SmartLab system is the first of its generation to be installed in the United States.

The SmartLab generates high quality data for traditional XRD analysis (determination of phases, crystal structure and orientation, lattice spacing, and other critical materials parameters). The Covalent system is equipped with the best available high resolution optics, and as such can investigate deviations from an ideal crystal that can be induced by defects, mosaicity or strain, for example. This opens access to analyses that are not feasible with traditional XRD systems installed at many industrial labs.

Dr. Colleen Frazer, Director of XRD/XRR Services, remarked, “Our new system is configured to include a high-flux rotating anode X-Ray source, multiple optical configurations (e.g., Parallel Beam, Bragg-Brentano, Grazing Incidence, In-Plane, and High Resolution), an elevated temperature stage and the HyPix-3000 Hybrid Pixel Array 0D/1D/2D Detector. This combination allows us to take measurements on a single sample using a wide variety of techniques, without the added time and costs of maintaining additional separate systems, and often without even having to remount the sample.”

Covalent Metrology Announces Collaboration With EDAX, INC.

Mahwah, NJ and Sunnyvale, CA, September 18, 2018 – Covalent Metrology, an innovative, new analytical service lab based in Silicon Valley, announced today that it will collaborate with EDAX, Inc., a business unit of AMETEK, Inc., on the application of energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) for the quantified characterization of a wide variety of materials.

Covalent undertook an extensive evaluation of competitive offerings and selected the EDAX 70mm Octane Elect Super EDS System equipped with advanced APEX software. This acquisition joins other recent purchases by Covalent as it continues to build out a portfolio of cutting-edge instruments and capabilities to better serve its Analytical Service customers.
