It’s hard to believe that we’re already at the doorstep of 2020! We look forward to growing and further developing our relationship with your company in the New Year ahead.

Covalent has had a very productive and exciting 2019. This past year, Covalent grew our Silicon Valley lab more than 50%, vastly expanded our portfolio of in-house instruments, signed collaborations with leading instrument companies, developed new relationships with Network Lab Partners, secured significant outside investment, closed on our first acquisition, grew our customer base 3-4x and more than doubled the size of our Team (now 24 talented and highly motivated individuals and counting). Whew!

In 2020, you can expect Covalent to continue aggressively growing and investing. Already, four new instruments are scheduled for installation in the next few months (dual beam FIB / SEM, XPS, SAM for larger samples and uXRF). Our recruiting efforts are targeted to support additional techniques, a greater volume of business and the development of some exciting new capabilities yet to be unveiled. Stay tuned!

SUNNYVALE, Calif.Dec. 10, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Anton Paar, a leading manufacturer of laboratory and process instrumentation, has selected Covalent Metrology to be the home of its new Silicon Valley demo showroom.

Anton Paar joins other industry leaders in selecting Covalent as a partner for their Silicon Valley demo showroom and applications lab. Collaboration with Covalent provides instrument manufacturers significant customer traffic, as well as access to Covalent’s diverse and experienced technical staff for demos and system improvement advice.

Several Anton Paar instruments will initially be installed at Covalent:

  • Tosca 400 Atomic Force Microscope – The Tosca 400 from Anton Paar facilitates AFM analysis with an easy to use, streamlined workflow. The Tosca 400 also includes the Probemaster, an innovation developed by Anton Paar to simplify cantilever exchange.
  • MCR302 Modular Compact Rheometer – The MCR 302 provides outstanding versatility, enabling users to measure material rheological properties, powder flow and tribology.
  • SurPASS 3™ Electrokinetic Analyzer (Surface Charge and Zeta Potential) – SurPASS 3 provides direct analysis of surface zeta potential, allowing for measurements such as determination of adsorption kinetics and characterization of an adsorbed surface layer.
  • PSA 1190 Particle Size Analyzer (PSA) – The PSA 1190 measures a wide range of particle sizes, both liquid suspension and as dry powders. Extreme accuracy and repeatability are enabled by the PSA 1190’s alignment-free operation.
  • Litesizer™ 500 light scattering system for nanoparticle analysis – The Litesizer 500 determines particle size, zeta potential, and molecular mass. The Litesizer 500 is the only DLS-based particle analyzer that performs a straightforward measurement of a sample’s refractive index and transmittance.

PVA TePla America has established an applications lab at Covalent Metrology’s Silicon Valley facility. The companies plan to jointly develop advanced non-destructive imaging capabilities.

 

Sunnyvale, CA (PRUnderground) November 25th, 2019—PVA TePla America, a leading equipment manufacturer and supplier of Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (SAM) and Plasma Treatment systems, has signed a cooperative agreement with Covalent Metrology, a leading provider of analytical services to advanced materials innovation companies.

Under the agreement, several advanced Scanning Acoustic Microscopes will be installed at Covalent’s Sunnyvale, CA laboratory, and both companies will be offering development and analytical services on the instruments to their respective customers.

SAM utilizes ultrasound waves to non-destructively examine internal structures, interfaces and surfaces of packaged or non-transparent substrates and parts.  The resulting acoustic signatures can be constructed into three-dimensional images which are analyzed to detect and characterize device flaws such as cracks, delamination, inclusions and voids in bonding interfaces, as well as to evaluate soldering and other interface connections.

Covalent Metrology and Rigaku Extend Partnership with Installation of Advanced X-Ray Characterization Tools at New Facility

SUNNYVALE, Calif.Nov. 5, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Rigaku Corporation, the world’s leading supplier of X-ray metrology technology, is pleased to announce the installation of two of its newest analytical instruments in the recently-expanded Sunnyvale, CA service lab of Covalent Metrology, a leading provider of analytical services to advanced materials innovation companies.

 

The delivery of the new systems furthers the pioneering collaboration agreement designed to support American high-tech industries with advanced metrology capabilities. The agreement provides Covalent with exceptional analytical service capabilities and provides Rigaku a North American demonstration facility located in Silicon Valley. The new systems will be available for demonstrations and for Covalent’s analytical service customers.

Among the newly installed instrumentation is the Rigaku AZX400 sequential wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF) spectrometer. The system, specifically designed to accommodate large or heavy samples, will be used for precise film and materials compositional analysis and uniformity assessment. The AZX400 system accepts samples up to 400mm in diameter and features an automatic loader to accommodate 200mm cassettes and 300mm front-opening unified pods (FOUPs).

As an optimal R&D system, the AZX 400 spectrometer is a foundational instrument for companies developing next-generation semiconductors, sensors, batteries, solar cells and advanced materials. It is designed to maximize analytical flexibility, covering a broad range of elements, with spot sizes down to 0.5mm diameter for spatially resolved measurements.

Also now installed at Covalent is the Rigaku CT Lab HX high-performance benchtop X-ray Micro-CT system, for 3D and 4D imaging of micro-scale morphologies. Computed tomography (CT) reveals, at high-speed, the high-resolution, three-dimensional structure of an object by means of computer-processed combinations of numerous X-ray images taken from different angles.The CT Lab HX system is a compact yet powerful micro-CT system that can provide three-dimensional X-ray images of a wide variety of samples. It features the largest field of view (FOV) and the most powerful X-ray source in its class (130 kV, 39W), enabling high-speed image acquisition as fast as 18 seconds/scan. The system will be broadly employed for the development and non-destructive failure analysis of advanced materials, packaged and fabricated devices and complex components.

Covalent Metrology Expands Team, Creates New Technical Groups

SUNNYVALE, Calif., October 2, 2019 — To keep pace with rapid growth, Covalent Metrology recently hired nine new team members and organized its in-house capabilities into four technical groups. These important additions strengthen the Covalent platform of analytical services for materials science innovators, which also includes an expanding host of network lab partners around the country.

Covalent’s in-house capabilities are now grouped as:

·      Scanning Probe and Electron Microscopy

·      Optical Characterization and Analysis

·      Materials Failure Analysis 

·      X-ray Characterization

 

Scanning Probe and Electron Microscopy is a new group that has been formed under the leadership of Dr. David Soltz, who joined Covalent in early September.  Dave brings to Covalent more than 20 years of metrology and characterization instrument development and application experience from such well-known companies as KLA, SunPower and Lumileds. 

 

Joining Dave in the new group are Jim Shearer, Member of Technical Staff in Electron Microscopy and FIB/SEM, and Dr. Austin Barnes, Member of Technical Staff for Scanning Probe Microscopy.  Jim joined in June and brings with him 25 years of experience in semiconductor failure analysis, including many years working on memory technology with Western Digital / SanDisk.  Austin recently completed his Ph.D. in Chemistry from UC Santa Barbara, where he worked in one of the leading academic groups in scanning probe microscopy.

 

The Optical Characterization and Analysis Group executes projects using a range of techniques including laser confocal, white light interferometry, spectral ellipsometry, UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometry, chromatic aberration and FTIR.  Matthew Wong, an experienced technical manager with a M.S. in Chemistry, joined Covalent in August to lead this team.  Matt rose through the ranks at GlassPoint Solar over his 8 years tenure there, most recently being their Manager of Coatings.  

 

Matt’s team includes Dr. Maxwell Junda, an ellipsometry expert with a Ph.D. and postdoctoral work from the University of Toledo, who joined mid-September, and Kim Tran, a Lab Technician with years of experience at a number of high growth start-ups.  Kim joined Covalent in July.

 

Materials Failure Analysis continues to be led by Roger Jay, who joined Covalent in connection with the acquisition of SMT Analytical earlier this year.  Tom Rieber joined Roger’s team as a Metrology Engineer in June after graduating with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from San Jose State. 

 

The X-ray Characterization Group is an important growth area for Covalent and is led by Dr. Colleen Frazer.  Colleen joined Covalent in January 2018 and has been Director of XRD / XRR since that time.  We will announce a series of new capabilities in this area in the coming weeks – so stay tuned! 

 

In addition to the new technical staff, Covalent is also pleased to welcome Warren Wong as Sr. Manager of Marketing, and Melissa Findley as our new Office Manager and Bookkeeper.
